10 Tips Before Choosing a Career in Real Estate
It all sounds so great, right? Making your own schedule, being your own boss, interacting with new people, a different day everyday. I'm talking about a career in real estate. Although there are some major perks to the job, it is not for everyone. If you're thinking about starting a career in real estate, we recommend these ten tips to make sure the job is right for you!
First, make sure you "fit" the job description. If you're looking for a job that gets you easy money with minimal work, this is not the right career for you. But if you're someone who is driven, not afraid of hard work, a people person, and can keep up with a changing industry; you may be headed in the right direction.
Second, talk to actual real estate agents. And not just one, you should talk to four or five, or as many as you can. Ask them about their daily routines, what kind of advice they give to new agents, are there any pitfalls, what makes a good realtor, etc. If the answers to these questions are ones you can live with, than keep reading.
Third, understand this is a commission based job; meaning if you don't work, you don't make money. Now, don't let this steer you away. Just understand that you should know how to budget and save to avoid financial crisis.
Which brings us to our fourth tip to consider a second income. This tip is most important in the first part of your career. It will take sometime for you to build clients and receive a commission check. That is why some agents choose to work real estate part time, while they work elsewhere to receive a steady income.
Fifth, start building your database of clients now by networking with people around you. Start by telling them about your new and exciting career. Be sure to get their information for a follow up once you're licensed. We recommend getting:
Sixth, don't think of this as your job, think of it as your business. The first thing you'll want to do is create your business plan and stick to it! Then make sure you are tracking mileage, and other expenses for tax purposes.
Seventh, never stop learning. Always be willing to take more classes, network with more experienced agents and read more books. This is especially important when it comes to technology.

Ninth, know your area. Part of the job is helping people buy homes within your city so it's important to know the different areas to best help people purchase the right house. This means knowing school districts, average prices, proximity to parks and family activities, etc.
